The Risk of Staying on VB6

Your VB6 System Still Works. That's Not the Same as Safe.

Microsoft stopped supporting VB6 years ago, yet the scheduling tools, machine parameter controls, and costing systems built on it still run production in plants across the country. They work, until they don't.

The risks are specific:

  • Developer talent is disappearing. Fewer engineers know VB6 every year, and the ones who do are retiring.
  • It can't talk to modern systems. VB6 apps typically run in isolation, which makes integration with newer tools and platforms difficult or impossible.
  • Security and compliance exposure grows every year. Frameworks this old were not built for today's compliance or cybersecurity standards.
  • One hardware failure and it's gone. If the machine running it dies, or the OS it depends on stops being supported, there's often no clean path back.

What a VB6 migration includes

Everything it takes to move off VB6 safely.

Grouped by what each part does for your operation.

  1. Understand the system

Know exactly what you're running before anything changes.

    • Dependency map

Every component, control, database, and connection your VB6 application relies on.

    • Business rule catalog

The rules buried in forms and button clicks, written down and turned into test cases.

    • Lost source recovery

No source code? We rebuild an understanding of the system from how it behaves.

  2. Move it safely

Change one piece at a time while production keeps running.

    • Phased migration to .NET

Modules move to modern .NET and C# one at a time, starting with the highest risk.

    • Side-by-side validation

Each new module is tested against the original before anyone switches over.

    • Connections rebuilt

Links to your ERP, label printers, scanners, and equipment carried over and tested.

  3. Improve as you go

Fix what frustrated your team, not just the code.

    • Modern interface

A web or desktop interface your team can use from any station or tablet.

    • Better workflows

Steps that slowed people down get fixed instead of copied into the new system.

    • Documentation and handoff

Clear documentation, so the system no longer depends on one person's memory.

Results

From four minutes per order to about 25 seconds.

A custom countertop manufacturer was running order processing through a legacy system that had grown for years. We moved its heavy logic to .NET in phases, and order processing went from about four minutes to roughly 25 seconds.

How it works

How we migrate VB6 without stopping production.

  1. Map the system

We map dependencies and pull the business rules out of the code, even when documentation or source code is missing.

  2. Choose the path

For each module, we choose a rewrite, a replatform, or automated conversion, and you approve a fixed-price plan.

    How Design & Scope works
  3. Migrate in phases

Modules move one at a time and are validated against the original, so production keeps running.

  4. Switch over and support

Your team switches over once each piece is proven, and we stay on to support and improve it.

Common questions

Questions about VB6 migration

Can VB6 applications still run on Windows 11?

For now, mostly. But the development tools are unsupported, third-party components get no updates, and every Windows update is a risk. Running is not the same as safe.

What if we lost the original source code?

It's common and solvable. We rebuild an understanding of the system from how it behaves, then migrate from there.

How long does a migration take?

A small, single-purpose tool can take a couple of months. A large, business-critical system usually moves in phases over several quarters. Design & Scope gives you a real timeline.

Can we migrate one module at a time?

Yes, and for most manufacturers that's the safer path. It also spreads the cost over time.

Will it still connect to our ERP and equipment?

Yes. Those connections are mapped at the start and rebuilt and tested as part of the migration.

The team is able to speak intelligently about what they're going to do and what potential issues would be. I've had a lot of contractors just nod their heads, without knowing what I'm asking for, and do whatever they want. Denovo Studios really took the time to understand what I was looking for.
